If you were one of the 12,000 plus folks who visited the WoodenBoat Show at Mystic Seaport in June of 2012, you likely "noticed" AIDA (yes, pronounced just like Verdi's opera) in the water. Restored by Doug Hylan, to many she looks like she just came out of the Herreshoff shop in 1926. A keel/centerboard yawl, AIDA is 33'6", with a 27' LWL, and has a 25-hp Beta marine diesel.
The book is subtitled N.G. Herreshoff's finest shallow-draft yawl. Her story is told by long-time WoodenBoat magazine technical editor Maynard Bray. Aida chronicles the history of Anne and Maynard Bray's family boat and the skilled, authentic restoration undertaken by D. N. Hylan & Associates when the Brays found a new home (now homeported at Shelter Island, NY) for her. The book includes hundreds of photos, from family and reconstruction photographs to those of photographer Benjamin Mendlowitz, known for his many beautiful images in WoodenBoat magazine as well as his Calendar of Wooden Boats. Original Herreshoff drawings from which AIDA was built are also included.
