A good over-view manual on the building of a superior rowing and sailing dinghy. A Joel White modified version of the famous Herreshoff Columbia model dinghy, this boat, which measures 12' 8", makes an excellent project for the boatbuilder with intermediate skills.
As Joel writes in the beginning of the book: So the end result is a larger version of the Nathanael Herreshoff dinghy, built to slightly heavier scantlings and a different construction method, with another rig and centerboard configuration. She rows and sail beautifully, thanks to her superior model, and she does all the things Ben (Joel's client) wanted. She looks good and was fun to build. Ben is pleased, I’m pleased, and I trust that N.G.H. is still resting comfortably. And now, years later, a Catspaw Dinghy still graces our WoodenBoat School waterfront and has had many, many students take her out for a row or sail. We are quite sure that Joel, too, is resting comfortably.
This version is carvel planked. While offsets are included with the book, it's advisable to build from the plans. If you are new to boatbuilding, Greg Rossel's book Building Small Boats would be a good book for how-to details.
