Description

Subtitled "The Art and Craft of Traditional Wooden Boat Construction", and boy oh boy is it, in spades.

WoodenBoat fans may recall Maritime Life & Traditions, and within that magazine they would have seen some of the fine work by Christian Topf. He also designed the lush website for that now defunct magazine. But he has clearly not lost sight of his passion for wooden boats.

This new book is just stunning... layout, design, and wonderful images all focused on  the building of the English Pilot Cutter Pellew, by Luke Powell and his team in Cornwall. She is the largest traditional wooden sailing boat to be built in the UK for decades.

Traditional Shipwright's Mastery Observed

Lodestar Books presents Christian Topf watching and photographing lumber, lead, cordage and canvass becoming 'Pellew', a beautiful pilot cutter, built from the plans of the mighty 'Vincent', Falmouth pilot cutter in service 1852 - 1922. With clear captions and thoughtful explanations, seventy tons of time proved materials and meticulous methods brought Luke Powell's ambitious build into being to meet the winds and the wide waters around the British Isles for chartering guests, skippered by Luke Powell, master shipwright and seasoned mariner.

An extraordinary book featuring some of the best in their business, oak shavings, tar and all!

Highly recommended.
