The Landing School Flyfisher, by Paul Lazarus. This 22' open, center-console fishing boat is meant for inshore fishing in shallow, protected water and breaking surf. The design is by Van Dam, and the construction by Landing School students. The structure includes a range of interesting wood-composite elements. Power is an Evinrude E-Tec two-stroke. FEATURED ON FRONT COVER.
Propeller Basics, by Dave Gerr. The basics of propeller mechanics: How they are measured, how they are rated, and how to choose the right one for your boat.
Five Classic Powerboat Routes, by various authors. In this compilation of articles, we present five classic inland routes for powerboats from around the World. They Are: The Intracoastal Waterway of the U.S. East Coast; the Northwest Passage; The Great Loop; The European Canals, and Australia's Murray River. Included in the resources we present are: cruising guide citations, organizations and clubs, and charter opportunities.
Trade Wind, by Alison Langley. The 62' Alden motorsailer TRADE WIND was built in 1938 as an elegant floating home. She was the first pleasure boat to ever be tank-tested. Her thorough restoration four years ago included a well-appointed paneled interior of iroko. Power is supplied by a pair of restored Detroit 6-71 diesels. In this photoessay, we present the highlights of the restoration, and walk through the restored boat.
MY WAY, by Alan Haig Brown. This 23'6" launch is inspired by Harry Bryan's Handy Billy design which was, in turn, inspired by the v-bottomed launched of William Hand designed nearly a century ago. The builder wanted a boat bigger than Handy Billy, so designed a longer, wider hull with a little less deadrise and a 4" higher sheer. The boat's cabin is inspired by 1930s-era Japanese-Canadian-built fishing boats.
DELIVERANCE, by Maynard Bray. This 43' power cruiser was designed and built for an owner whose previous boat was a converted sardine carrier. DELIVERANCE carries the same amenities and aesthetic as her working forebear, but in a small, more manageable package.
The Carolina Sportfish 23, by Chris Caswell. This 23' open, offshore sportfishing boat is designed in the Carolina tradition, which is to say that she has a markedly flared bow, a broken sheerline, and fishing-tower console. The outboard-motor-powered boat is available either as plans for the home builder, or as a kit.
Hooper Island Draketail, by Grigg Mullen. The Author launched this 25' boat in fall 2012, after "an intensive self-study course in boatbuilding." Here, he describes the process of self education as a boatbuilder that gave him the ability and confidence to take on the project, the history of this distinctive Maryland type, and the process of building it.
AREZOO, by John Werlich. The construction of this classic 25'6" Edwardian steam-powered launch, built to the plans of a1905 English model, was a collaborative effort. Lines were taken by Scottish engineer Alex Ritchie and plans developed by Selway Fisher Design. Ritchie, of Wrabness, Essex, built the three-drum boiler, and the engine was built by the late Peter Freebody. The cold-molded hull was built by Brion Jorgensen in Ontario; Werlich did the interior fit-out, steamfitting, and metalwork.
NEVERDONE, A Virginia family rebuilt this 1938 Richardson for cruising on Chesapeake Bay. Here, we describe the process of acquiring and restoring the boat, and offer a brief sidebar on the Richardson company.
The Glen-L Fisherman, by Matt Murphy. Joe Caruso, a high-school junior, has been building boats in some form or other since he was six years old. Last year, he completed his most ambitious project to date: a 13' GlenL runabout, the Fisherman model. Here, we look at the details of this design and its construction and how it performs-and we look at Joe's experience building the boat.
HOLIDAY, by Larry Cheek. "I have a rule," says Dan Bartlett. "No new holes." That's how the owner describes the maintenance and ownership philosophy on this double-ended custom power cruiser that's been in his family since it was built in 1946. The design is by Ed Monk Sr., and it was built at Edison Technical School on Lake Union in 1946.
MIRACLE, by Eric Sorensen. MIRACLE is a Lake Union Dreamboat, which Bon Irving, a Gig Harbor, Washington, craftsman, rebuilt over 19 years as a backyard project. Here we discuss the history of the dreamboat type, and the process of rebuilding this boat.
JANETTE LAMSON, by Matt Murphy. This classic 33' Maine lobsterboat was built by Vinal Beal and his son Osmond on Beals Island, Maine, in 1963-64. She's essentially unrestored, though is kept in good condition by her boatbuilder owner, and is available for bareboat charter. Here, we examine her classic appeal, and list other opportunities in bareboating a classic motorboat.
